More and more people are ready to dump the two dominant political parties--different in name, similar in stature--in favor of actual working-class representation. The Kshama Sawant campaign is running to build this independent left alternative here in Seattle and nationwide. The results so far have been tremendous.

We were the first candidate in modern Washington State history to advance to the general election in two separate races, one as a write-in candidate with over 12% of the vote against the second most powerful Democrat in Washington State. We challenged the state’s undemocratic electoral system in the courts and won the right to have our party preference, Socialist Alternative, listed on the ballot! Even the mainstream media has not been able to ignore us any longer, with prominent coverage in The Seattle Times, Seattle’s NPR station, The Stranger (Seattle’s main weekly paper), The Associated Press, among others.

We have a historic opportunity to win the highest vote in the country for an independent left-wing candidate in 2012, possibly with 15%-30% of the vote. We intend to use our campaign’s momentum to launch a broader left alliance that will run independent left-wing candidates for City Council and Mayor in 2013, and for state and federal races in 2014.

But we are missing sufficient human and financial resources to tap into our full potential. Our opponent, Frank Chopp, has raised over $125,000 by schmoozing millionaires, and has the corporate media behind him. One the other hand, we do not take corporate donations, and have raised $16,000. But to run a credible campaign, we will need at least $30,000.
