Capitalism is in an historic crisis. Economic recession and depression grip Greece, Spain, Portugal and other European countries. The crisis of capitalism is reaching a dramatic phase, with more and more people looking for solutions to poverty, racism, sexism, declining benefits, environmental destruction, and mass unemployment. The root of these problems is a system that thrives on low wages, slashed social programs, and divide-and-rule tactics to attack oppressed people.

On 15 January 1919, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, the finest brains of the German working class and its most heroic figures, were brutally murdered by the bloodthirsty, defeated German military, backed to the hilt by the cowardly social-democratic leaders Noske and Scheidemann. Their murders, carried out by the soldier Otto Runge, were decisive in the defeat of the German revolution but were also indissolubly linked to the victory of Hitler and the Nazis 14 years later.

EVERY YEAR IN Britain alone 85,000 women are raped. One in four women and one in 20 men are thought to be affected by rape at some point in their lifetimes. The emotional and psychological after-effects of being raped are well documented. But it’s also not just about those individuals. Rape has a huge impact on our society.

On November 14th, millions of workers across Europe went on strike and participated in mass protests in the first internationally-coordinated strike action in Europe against austerity since the crisis began. Protests and strikes took place in over 20 different countries in response to the call by the European Trade Union Confederation – ETUC. In Spain and Portugal in particular, where mass general strikes were taking place, the protests were enormous. Also, a common feature of the demos in Italy, Spain and Portugal was the unprecedented level of State repression.

Public confidence in capitalism’s institutions has disintegrated - the combined product of unbelievable wealth inequality, chronic unemployment, sky-high costs of health care and education, racist policing, crackdowns on protesters, endless wars, and systematic environmental destruction. The cherry on top is the incredible record of banking-sector scandals, crises, and failures since the start of the Great Recession.

Though Election Day in the US isn't until 6 November, it is already abundantly clear who the winner of this year’s presidential election will be: Wall Street and big business! The 2012 election cycle is expected to be more awash in corporate cash than any previous election, with a projected $5.8 billion to be spent across all races. In 2008, Barack Obama was elected to the presidency amidst a whirlwind of enthusiasm for the "hope" and "change" he had promised America, but this sentiment is now long gone.
