The Committee for a Workers’ International condemns the recent Iraqi government attack on the Ashraf refugee camp, run by the Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mujahideen (PMOI), in Diyala province. This attack, on July 28 and 29, killed at least 9 and injured over 400 people from the camp, while 38 are still be detained by the Iraqi authorities. Since then a large number of Iranians at Ashraf have been on hunger strike.

A couple of years ago, Coffee Strong was only an idea. Fueled by their anger against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, recently discharged veterans Alex Bacon and Seth Manzel of Iraq Veterans Against the War felt a need for a coffee shop at Fort Lewis, Washington, where active duty soldiers could learn the full story behind the war, get counseling for military abuses, PTSD, and deployment issues.

In twelve days, fifteen British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan. Eight were killed in just 24 hours, three of them just 18 years old. This senseless waste of young lives has aroused a new anger and questioning about the war in Afghanistan.

While public hospitals, education, and other public services are being cut, the U.S. government continues to pour money into the sinkhole that is the continued wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“These houses that were full of children and women and elders were bombed by planes," an Afghan official told the Associated Press in the wake of a U.S. bombing on an Afghan village on May 5 that local residents say killed 150 civilians. Such is the reality of the war in Afghanistan, where the U.S. is sending 21,000 more troops to join the 38,000 already there.

The ghastly civil war in Sri Lanka, that has been raging for more than 25 years, appears to be ending in what an International Red Cross worker called “Nothing short of a catastrophe." As the Sri Lankan Army broke through what appeared to be the last defenses of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on April 20, tens of thousands of terrorized civilians poured out in a dazed mass.

Control of Iraq and the entire oil-rich region has been a strategic centerpiece of U.S. foreign policy for the last 60 years. Does Obama’s withdrawal plan represent an abandonment of those imperialist aspirations? Will Obama follow through on his promise to end the war?

16 days into the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, Katie Quarles interviewed Salma, a left activist from Cairo in the "Egyptian popular committee for solidarity with the Palestinians," about the protests going on in Egypt against the Israeli attacks and for the opening of the Rafah border crossing to allow Gazans to escape and aid to enter.

"Terrified, starving, traumatized, thirsty, desperate," was how the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in the Palestinian territories described the Gazan people. The death toll is approaching 1,000, a third of them children. Around 4,000 are injured, many with appalling blast injuries such as loss of limbs, that will be life-long.

The U.S. is a key enabler of Israeli militarism and the oppression of the Palestinian people. Israel is in fact the number one recipient of U.S. aid, to the tune of $3 billion each year, much of it military. This aid is used to buy the tanks, helicopters, and machine guns used in the current war.

During his campaign, Obama appealed to antiwar sentiment, convincing many he would bring an end to the war. The ruling elite have also put tremendous hopes in Obama to restore U.S. imperialism from its weakened state. An honest look at his foreign policy team, his stated policies, and his corporate backing, and it becomes very clear which side has the stronger pull.

On Saturday, June 10, hundreds of thousands demonstrated across the world against the brutal military assault on Gaza by the Israeli government. In London, 100,000 rallied and marched. This video is from the British section of the Committee for a Workers International, the Socialist Party of England and Wales, and their contingent on the demonstration.

Missiles from F-16 fighter planes screaming down on children sleeping or cowering in crowded homes and basements; this is state terrorism of the most brutal kind, raining terror onto a trapped population that doesn’t even have enough fuel, water and medicines to treat the injured.
